Puget Paving & Construction, Inc. was contracted to import and replace approximately 120 tons of light loose riprap under the Clear Creek Bridge in Pierce County. The project carried a strict timeline, as the in-water work could only be completed during a narrow 10-day fish closure window.
Because most of the area was inaccessible by vehicle or heavy machinery, clearing out rubbish had to be performed entirely by hand. Despite the tight deadline, Puget Paving crews successfully pulled and properly recycled all debris beneath the bridge, including old car tires resting below the water line.
While the overall environmental impact of this project is difficult to measure, removing deteriorating rubber tires from a primary tributary to the Puyallup River in Tacoma and ensuring their proper recycling provides significant, lasting benefits to local communities and native wildlife.
