The 2025 CERC Appreciation Award is presented to Biomedical Waste Services, Inc. (BWS). This company has consistently demonstrated an unwavering commitment to sustainability and has been a valued member of the CERC Community since 2023. This award recognizes exemplary and proactive efforts in upholding environmental best practices, ensuring both employee safety and community health.
By implementing the reusable sharps container program, BWS is significantly reducing single-use plastic sharps containers in the waste stream, preventing millions of pounds of plastic and medical waste from entering landfills annually. The medical waste, after inhouse steam-sterilization treatment, is then converted into energy.
The automated washing and sterilization system uses the existing facility steam source for heating wash water, reducing utility needs and water consumption compared to traditional washing methods. The wash system efficiently utilizes rinse water and recirculates water internally in the system to reduce overall water consumption during the washing and sterilization process.
BWS uses a proprietary blend of environmentally safe sanitization chemicals that fully sanitize containers above and beyond industry standards without impacting sewer discharge requirements allowing water to be recycled and reused. The sterilization process prevents chemical pollution and protects local waterways.
In addition to environmental benefits, the reusable sharps container robotic technology significantly reduces on-the-job safety risks and prevents potential exposure incidents. In September 2025, BWS was honored with multiple awards and government citations. These accolades were presented during the official ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new robotic technology, recognizing five decades of dedicated community partnership.
